DIGITAL CULTURES OF SPECIES REVIVAL
Lecture by Sarah Bezan (EN)
This talk examines digital cultures of de-extinction: the science of reviving extinct species through the means of gene editing, back-breeding, and cloning. While the prospect of resurrecting extinct species like the woolly mammoth opens up broader debates about the future of biodiversity, it also invites us to consider the cultural and aesthetic drivers of de-extinction initiatives. What kinds of speculative future natures do we desire to see, to touch, to design? To answer this question, Bezan brings together examples from across the history of cinema and photography, including virtual reality exhibitions and speculative fictions involving AI subplots, to illustrate how digital cultures shape speculative future natures after extinction.
