THINKING SUBSTRATE: PLANETARY RISK AND MORE-THAN-HUMAN COGNITION

Panel Talk by Weibel Institute for Digital Cultures (EN)

Unthinkable Cognition

Cognition has never been the exclusive property of the human — it disperses across material substrates, technological assemblages, and ecological processes in ways that exceed any one unified cognitive subject. As cognitive agency becomes increasingly distributed across immeasurable scales, it grows harder to continue to adhere to the inherited frameworks from which risk, coexistence and futurity have been evaluated. As such, the consideration of non-human cognition becomes a condition that carries with it far-reaching stakes and suddenly places the human as merely a very vulnerable speck in the vastness of cosmos. If these processes are found at scales from the microbial to the planetary, surging through electrical currents and on the internet, how does this cognitive multiplicity transform the very terms from which existential stakes and togetherness are articulated? What does it mean to think at the edge of extinction?
