LU YANG

Lu Yang’s 3D animations and installations explore relationships between body and consciousness, spirituality and science, and the limits of being human. Many works use the artist’s own body as a proxy, undergoing experiments of multiplication, disintegration, and dissection. Recent works focus on the genderless avatar DOKU, named after Dokusho Dokushi (We are born alone, and we die alone). DOKU functions as a digital shell and virtual human, described as a reincarnation of Lu Yang and an extension of the soul into the digital realm.

Lu Yang (b. 1984, Shanghai) lives and works between Shanghai and Tokyo. Exhibitions include Amant (New York), Museum of the Moving Image (New York), Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris), Kunsthalle Basel, Mori Art Museum (Tokyo), and the 59th Venice Biennale. In 2022, Lu Yang was named Artist of the Year by Deutsche Bank. Works are held in collections including ARoS, Deutsche Bank Collection, Fondation Louis Vuitton, Hirshhorn Museum, M+, and UBS Art Collection.
